I finished the bed!
Thanks to Warren and Angela for their help. The footboard is hard maple. The headboard is hard maple/walnut. The bed rails are red oak. No stain was used, just three coats of polyurethane for durability. I used some taper connectors from Rockler for the knockdown hardware. The frame holding the bed is made out of pine and poplar and has a "spine" running underneath the center of the bed for additional support. The top of the bed is almost 30" off the ground, so getting out of bed is easy for pregnant women ;) Here are some pics (sorry about the quality, my digital camera is not the best...)
